WE SAY NO TO SUSPICIOUS INGREDIENTS

We say no

Young Carpo is all about the goodness of the ingredients used and how they work in harmony with your skin.

We are firm believers of “What is not in a skin care product is equally important as what is in the product”.

If an ingredient is not nutritious enough for the skin, we simply don’t use it.

If questions have been raised about an ingredient’s safety, it’s a no-go from us!

The list of suspicious ingredients we don’t use is rather long. Here are the main baddies.

Parabensplusminus

Parabens are chemicals, used as preservatives in just about all skin care and beauty products; from soap to lotion to makeup. Their role is to keep products fresh and bacteria-free. Parabens are known endocrine disruptors, meaning they mimic oestrogen in the body and can lead to hormonal imbalances, and possibly even, breast cancer. So, if “paraben” is in the word, such as methylparaben, proplyparaben, etc., think twice before buying that product.

You needn’t worry about Young Carpo skin care solutions. “Parabens” are nowhere to be found.

Synthetic Fragrancesplusminus

Almost every single conventional skin care and cosmetic product (even “unscented” ones) contains synthetic/artificial fragrances. Manufacturers aren’t required to reveal what’s actually in their fragrances (trade secret), so you’ll simply see “Fragrance” or “Parfum” on the ingredients’ list, when it could actually be a cocktail of carcinogens, allergens, endocrine disruptors, and irritants.

At Young Carpo, we made a conscious choice to not use (not now, nor never) synthetic fragrances. Instead, we use a natural aroma for all our skin care formulations; a heavenly mix of Mediterranean citrus fruit and freshly cut grass!

Sulfatesplusminus

Used in a plethora of personal care and skin care products, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS/SLES) are surfactants, i.e. they attract both oil and water, so they are really effective in washing away dirt from your skin. They are also good foaming agents, responsible for turning liquids into foamy lather.

But if sulfates are so effective, why are they considered harmful? As it turns out, they can be too effective at washing away oil, stripping skin from its natural oils and making it feel dry and “tight”.

Sulfates are also known to cause skin irritations and redness or trigger allergies.

In brief, sulfates are potential irritants, so we have replaced them with natural ingredients that do the job just as well without irritating your skin.

Phthalatesplusminus

Phthalates are a family of chemical compounds primarily used to make PVC, or vinyl, flexible and pliant. They are also used as solvents or fixatives.

They are in hundreds of products you use every day; from perfume, nail polish, soap, shampoo and skin moisturisers to household cleaners and food. Colourless and odourless, they are next to impossible to avoid, lurking in unexpected places.

Examples of phthalates include: DBP, DEHP, DEP and others. Despite inconclusive research, scientists suspect that phthalates are endocrine disruptors and can cause hormonal and reproductive problems, as well as birth defects.

When science is in doubt about potential harm caused by the use of specific ingredients, rest assured we will not use them in any of Young Carpo’s formulations.

Siliconesplusminus

Boy, does the beauty industry love villains! Be it parabens, sulfates, etc., the list of bad guys becomes longer by the minute.

Silicone, an ingredient widely used in skin care and cosmetic formulas in order to give products a soft, smooth finish, is one of those villains. Despite the fact that there isn’t enough scientific evidence to back up claims such as clogging pores, causing acne and congestion, etc., we at Young Carpo have banned them from our product formulations. Granted, they are great for primers, because of their velvety feel, but we prefer to use natural ingredients, such as mastic gum, which delivers the same benefits without the ubiquity behind it.

In addition, certain silicones (synthetic) are harmful to the environment due to their inability to biodegrade. So, nah, silicones are not for us!

PEGsplusminus

PEGs (Polyethylene Glycols) are petroleum-based compounds, widely used in skin care as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers.

The safety of PEGs has recently been questioned due to the toxicity of some of its byproducts (ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane) that may contaminate formulations.

PEGs have a penetration enhancing effect, i.e. they make absorption of unwanted ingredients easier. In other words, they make it easier for toxins and impurities to penetrate deep into your skin.

The main takeaway is that PEGs should best be avoided, especially if you have sensitive skin. Worry not! You won’t find them in any of our skin care formulations!

Mineral Oilsplusminus

Similarly to other dubious skin care ingredients, mineral oils have raised many questions regarding safety of use. These claims range from pore clogging and acne triggering to drying out skin and hindering absorption.

Mineral oils are occlusives, i.e. they form a protective layer on top of your skin to lock in moisture and reduce transepidermal water loss.

So, other than the prevention of water loss, mineral oils do nothing to nourish your skin, as they contain no nutrients.

What is more, they are derivatives of petroleum and we all know what that means for the environment!

At Young Carpo, we use natural ingredients, packed with nutrients to ensure your skin stays healthy and blemish-free.  After all, we are all about “Food for your skin”, right?

Formaldehydeplusminus

Formaldehyde is used extensively by the beauty industry as a preservative. It keeps products from spoiling, prevents bacteria growth and prolongs shelf life.

It has been linked to asthma and neurotoxicity and is believed to be a carcinogen and a skin irritant. However, research studies have been inconclusive regarding potential health risks of formaldehyde use in skin care.

Whenever there is a concern about the use of an ingredient in skin care, we at Young Carpo, simply don’t use it.

You needn’t worry! Young Carpo is a formaldehyde-free brand!

GMOsplusminus

GMOs stand for Genetically Modified Organisms. OMG, the name itself sounds scary!

GMOs are plants and other living organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi, derived from molecular biotechnology techniques that alter their genetics to modify their characteristics.

The problem with GMOs in skin care is that there aren’t enough studies to allow us to conclude if and/or how they might affect our health.

And if there is doubt, the answer is simple. You won’t find them in any Young Carpo formulation.

Ethanolaminesplusminus

Ethanolamines are surfactants; they help remove dirt and oil on skin by dissolving grease. They are usually listed as “MEA, DEA, & TEA,” abbreviations for monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, and triethanolamine.

They are suspected of causing skin irritations, allergies and of being toxic. Suspicion alone, is enough for Young Carpo to not even consider using them!
